While the media keeps telling us that Democrats need 60 seats (including Martin and Franken plus Sanders and Lieberman) to have a filibuster-proof majority, I must call bullshit.
I've been looking over the numbers and I think we are more solid than they think we are.
As it stands today after the Chambliss win and conceding a Franken loss (which looks likely even as I am still hopeful), we have 56 Dems, two Indies who vote Dem, and 42 Repubs.
This gets us 58 votes. I think Lieberman owes us to the point where we can count on his support. Toss in Republicans Snowe and Collins, and we have 60.
On our side, Landrieu and Pryor are wild-cards, putting us back to 58. But Gregg, Lugar, and Voinovich are persuadable, putting us back over the top.
Some worry about Carper, but Biden can handle him. Same goes for Nelson. Lugar is an Obama guy and can give Nelson a lot of political cover with the moderates.
So let the talking heads blather on about how we didn't get 60. We did, they just don't know it yet.
